Emory University has a long history of welcoming Fulbright scholars to campus. The role of a faculty sponsor is central to the quality of the Fulbright scholar’s experience at Emory. Below is a checklist to help faculty and their departments plan for and host the visit of a Fulbright scholar.
The host department should establish a primary contact/liaison for the visiting scholar to answer any questions or concerns. The liaison is responsible for coordinating all of a visiting scholar’s needs at Emory, including:
Notifying the Office of International Affairs (OIA) of the scholar’s arrival by calling (404) 727-7504.
Obtaining an Emory Card
Arranging for a University email account
Providing office space and computer and library access
Introducing the scholar to Emory colleagues and staff
Conducting an informational tour of campus
Covering any additional administrative or departmental duties with the scholar
A visiting scholar has a number of personal issues they may need assistance with prior to their arrival. The liaison should be prepared to provide information on the following:
Short-term housing information and suggestions
Securing a bank account, driver’s license and social security card
Transportation options during stay and upon arrival (including public transportation, university transportation, and rental cars)
Health insurance for dependents, if necessary
School registration for dependents, if necessary
The job of the host liaison does not end when the scholar arrives on campus. It is important to remain involved with the scholar throughout their stay by arranging social activities with members of the host department and in the Emory community. Maintaining frequent contact with visiting scholars throughout their stay will help ease the transition and foster a productive working relationship.
*Visiting international Fulbright Scholars are encouraged to check in with Emory’s International Student and Scholar Programs (www.issp.emory.edu) and attend a scholar orientation.
